MEDC 2007 Australia Dates Announced

I got the word through that the dates have been set for MEDC in Australia, so the date to keep the calendar clear is May 16th. The exact location is still being worked on but Sydney is looking the goods at the moment.

With Windows Mobile 6 being just released it will no doubt be a great oppertunity to get all the good oil on the latest information.

The business case of Mobility

I was asked today why would a company would want to use mobility. A fair questions I suppose and one that is assumed by people like myself who understand this technology. So what is the business case for mobility ?

Recent years has seen IT move from being a cost center to a business enabler. The current wave of technology definately includes mobile devices, which in the last few years has seen jump in hardware specification, increasing speeds in connectivity and of course form factors that allows the right device for the right job.

Every company has business processes that are key to its success, these may be different to even business units within the same business let along other factors such as country. These key processes typically have a common features of integrating historical data to activities such as creating sales orders, modifying production activities, etc.

So it becomes important for this data to be accessible at the point of these activities, but usually they are not. Instead recording of information via paper forms and rekeying of this data is undertaken. Also the ability to provide timely responses is also lost by loss of data connectivity.

This is where the power of mobility comes to the forefront, the ability to connect the business data to the business process at the point of the activity.

Some example of these processes are:

• Inventory, stock, and order management, tracking their fulfilment, and retrieving inventory or production data directly at customer locations.
• Traditional paper forms based processes, such as filling or ordering prescriptions, logging in equipment received for repair
• Managing customer deliveries.
• Real estate management
• Geographic information systems (GIS) mapping.
